Green ocean — not a dead end, not empty water

A generic mushroom ID PDF is a red ocean. A location-specific first-flush / last-flush planner plus a seller-grade book is a real, seasonal business.

Why it is not blue

iNaturalist, Picture Mushroom, Audubon, Peterson, local clubs, and free extension PDFs already ID mushrooms. You will not out-ID the internet.

Why it is not dead

Nobody owns the commercial-picker workflow: when a zone actually starts, what a buying station pays, which permit you need, and a printable checklist you can take into the rain. That bundle is undersold.

Search demand

Ranges compiled from public keyword tools, Etsy seasonal patterns, and known morel/chanterelle spikes. Treat as planning bands, not a purchased Ahrefs export.

What you can actually make

  • Flagship PDF $27, seller book $19, berry/calendar add-ons $15.
  • Email list of 2,500–8,000 foragers built from the survey + seasonal content.
  • 2–4% list conversion on each regional drop. 200–900 PDF sales in year 1 is realistic.
  • Etsy/Gumroad take 6–10%. Ads only after organic proof.
  • You do not become a millionaire on one mushroom PDF. You become a catalog.

Risks

  • Liability: someone will mis-ID a death cap. Insurance + brutal disclaimers + no '100% sure' promise.
  • Licensing real photos (we used field photos for the demo; commercial SKUs need cleared rights).
  • Seasonality: 70% of revenue in 10 weeks (April morels, October chants).
  • Psilocybin curiosity traffic is legally toxic. Do not monetize how-to-trip content.
  • Ukraine and Himalayan guides must be written with local partners, not parachuted.

Better bets if you want bluer water

Cottage-food + commercial-forager compliance kits (state/province packs)

People will pay $24 to not get shut down. Tiny search, high intent, almost no decent PDFs.

$30–80k/yr if you ship 20 jurisdiction packs.

Annual dated hunt / fish / forage 'openers' subscription — $39/yr

Recurring. You already have the chassis. SMS on first flush is the moat.

2,000 subs = ~$70k. Harder, bigger.

Legal functional-mushroom grow planners (lion's mane, reishi, oyster)

Cultivation is legal, searchable, and pairs with the medicinal story without the felony.

Sits on a $30B+ functional-mushroom wave.

Restaurant wild-ingredient one-pagers (chefs, not hikers)

B2B PDF + invoice template. 400 chefs × $49 is a quiet good year.

$15–40k, low support.

Landowner 'mushroom lease' kit for timber families

PNW/BC private timber wants pickers managed, not banned. Zero consumer competition.

Niche, $10–25k, prestige.
